Take a deep breath and
Jump
Into the wide open
Waiting arms.

And watch us as we
Burn.
And watch us when the world
Turns
It's back to our pain
To our shame.

Don't be afraid to
Lose
It
All.

In every moment
We're killing ourself
Just a little
More.
Everytime we feel more
Alive
We are only believing
Lies.

Here
In this moment
We are at the
End,
The final piece,
The last line,
The final moment.

Don't be afraid to
Take
That
Step.

I'll be here when you
Doubt,
When you can't find a way
Out
Of this life
This prison
Where you hide.
And when you think you
Can't
Take
It,
Just call my name.
I'll be your protection
From an extended
Existance.

Just promise to let me
Push you
Off the
Edge
Into the water's
Cold
Embrace.

I'll be laughing along
As the fire burns,
And when you're taking your
Final breath,
I'll be there
Smiling with you.

Promise kept.

Author's Comments

The title, and poem in it's entirety, are influenced largely off of Freud's death instinct, more commonly known as the Thanatos drive, after the Greek deity Thanatos, the personification of death. As of late I do believe this drive exists in people, despite other issues I have with Freud's concepts and other work.

Some of the poem drifted slightly from where I wanted it originally to go, because of influence from the song "Butterfly" by Shock Stars. I was working on this while I recorded that song, so it was playing while I wrote a verse or two somewhere in the middle of the poem.

I dunno how much I like the poem, though I do love the concept and theme. So comments and suggestions are more than welcome.

The death drive...that thing that makes you not scared of heights as much as scared that you won't be able to stop yourself from jumping.

reminds me a bit of jim morrison's poetry, (more in theme than in style.) it captures the excitement of the unknown, the allure of death... i love it!

I used to stand for something
Now I'm on my hands and knees
Traded my god in for this one
And he signs his name with a capital G

Exactly. I was hoping to capture that feeling here, but I'm not sure how well I did.
